"At the right of the front row of the seminarians is Sylvia's husband, erotic avant garde novelist Georges Bataille; next to him (centre) is an international master of the photographic gaze, Henri Cartier-Bresson, who has commented thus on the sequence: "Jean always wanted his assistants to feel what it was like on the other side of the camera, and I was given the role of a seminarist... I walked along with Georges Bataille, the husband... of Sylvia..., and as she was on the swing I had to look with amazement at her petticoats!" (31) The Batailles were already partially estranged; when the marriage finally broke down, Sylvia Bataille married psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan."
